The JWU men's basketball team opened its 2014-15 campaign with a decisive, 75-42 home win over Johnson University (FL).
A quick start by So. Ricardo Suarez and Jr. Frank Bennett along with defensive pressure from So. Josh Medina and Jr. Antwan Hill sparked the Cats to 14-2 lead which forced a timeout by the visiting Suns. JWU continued to turn up the heat defensively and share the ball offensively to push the lead to 28-11 after a Bennett long range bomb. Jr. Joel Kukulu, playing his first game at JWU, capped off the impressive half with a putback layup at the buzzer to put the Cats ahead 35-13 going into the locker room.
Kukulu and Suarez led the way at the half with 11pts and 9pts apiece.
The 2nd half saw more of the same defensively and offensively as the Cats pushed the lead to 47-20 after Bennett's second three pointer of the game. Jr. Jumaoke Smith came off the bench in the second half and scored 13pts including 3 for 3 from downtown. JWU coasted to the victory while playing everyone on the roster.
JWU was led by Suarez with 17 points. Smith, Bennett and Kukulu finished with 13pts, 12pts and 11pts apiece.
"I loved our sustained effort today. Everyone came to play together and for each other. We had good ball movement and really shared it" said Coach David Graham.
JWU hosts NCAA D3 Covenant College on Friday, November 7.
