NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Nov. 18, 2017) – The Johnson & Wales men's basketball team (1-4, 1-1 TSC) picked up its first win of the season, defeating Thomas University (3-4, 0-2 TSC), 68-55, on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats used a late surge midway through the second half to pull away from the Night Hawks with a 14-3 run by JWU with 3:57 left in the game. The Wildcats maintained their double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest to snap a four-game losing streak to start the season.
Nick Preradovic scored a game-high 16 points, draining four 3-point buckets and converting all four of his attempts from the free-throw line. Gino Fils-Aime posted 14 points on 4-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-6 from 3-point range and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Also scoring in double-figures was Antonio Ruby, who registered 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He swatted four shots to increase his team lead in blocked shots to nine on the season. Isa Brandon led JWU with nine rebounds.
The Wildcats 40.4 percent from the floor (21-of-52) and was 10-of-29 from beyond the arc. JWU was solid from the free-throw line, converting 84.2 percent of its attempts (16-of-19). The Wildcats held a 42-37 edge in rebounding and held TU to 30.2 percent shooting from the field (19-of-63) and 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range.
JWU led for most of the game, trailing just under three minutes on the afternoon.
The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 21, with a trip to Melbourne, Florida, to take on Florida Tech. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
