NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2018) – All five starters scored in double-figures as the Johnson & Wales men's basketball team (7-17, 5-9 TSC) defeated the No. 10-ranked St. Thomas Bobcats (18-6, 11-2 TSC), 84-81, on Thursday night from the Wildcat Center.
In a game that saw 11 lead changes, JWU used a second-half push to lead by as many as 11 points over the top-rated team in the Sun Conference. The Wildcats used hot shooting to down the Bobcats as JWU shot 60.4 percent from the floor (32-of-53) and 54.2 percent from 3-point range (13-of-24).
With the score tied at 64-64, Isa Brandon scored two of his 17 points with a layup at the 11:27 mark. That score sparked an 11-0 run for the Wildcats, who took a 75-64 lead with 7:17 left in the contest. STU tried to close the gap but were unable to regain the lead as JWU handed the Bobcats their second conference loss of the season.
Brandon notched his 14th double-double of the season, grabbing 14 boards to go along with his 17 points. He also had a team-high two blocked shots. Gino Fils-Aime led all Wildcats with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, including four 3-pointers. Nick Preradovic contributed 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, making three from downtown. Antonio Ruby (15 points) and Majuan Bates (13 points) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats. JWU did a tremendous job of distributing the wealth as the team recorded 18 assists. Four players (Fils-Aime, Bates, Preradovic, and Brandon) each registered four helpers in the game.
STU ended the night, shooting 52.6 percent from the floor (30-of-57) and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-22).
The Wildcats will head to Miami Gardens to take on Florida Memorial on Saturday, February 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
