LAKELAND, Fla. (Nov. 29, 2018) – A career-high 26 points by junior Michael Stuart was not enough as the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's basketball team's (0-7, 0-3 TSC) upset bid of No. 11 Southeastern (6-1, 3-0) fell short, 73-64, on Thursday evening.
A poor shooting performance in the first half (29.0 percent) put the Wildcats in a 12-point hole after 20 minutes of action. JWU regrouped in the second half outscoring the Fire, 38-35, but it was not enough as the Wildcats lost its third-straight Sun Conference game.
Stuart scored a game-high 26 points on 8-of-9 shooting from 3-point range to go along with a 2-of-2 performance from the free-throw line. The native of Port St. Lucie, Florida, also registered a game-high five assists. Junior Sidney Alcena posted 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor with two treys. Leading the team in rebounding was junior Willem Vermylen, who collected seven boards versus SEU.
The Wildcats finished the night shooting 37.3 percent from the floor (22-of-59) while draining 13-of-32 attempts from 3-point range (40.6 percent). SEU ended the contest making 23-of-46 shots from the floor (50.0 percent) and converted 45.5 percent attempts from beyond the arc (5-of-11). The Fire went 22-of-30 from the free-throw line (73.3 percent) while JWU went to the line just nine times, converting seven attempts (77.8 percent).
The Fire outrebounded the Wildcats, 39-24, with JWU holding a 14-8 edge in second-chance points.
JWU will return home to host the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Saturday, December 1. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
