San Antonio, TX -- The San Antonio Shootout began Monday under beautiful sunny skies, brisk temperatures, and a steady early breeze. The Canyons course at TPC San Antonio was originally scheduled to host a 54-hole event before high winds and vicious gusts forced the cancellation of Monday's afternoon round.
With gusts of 40-50 MPH in the forecast, the Wildcats knew that patience and toughness would be key to position themselves for a run at victory on Tuesday. Sr. Brandon Meltzer led the pack with an opening round of 77, just two strokes back of the first round leader. Damon Salo followed him up with a 79, while Josh Briere, Matt Morin, and Zack Ross posted rounds of 81, 83, and 90 respectively. Their team total of 320 was enough to put them within eight strokes of leader Oklahoma City on a tough day when the average score for the field was 83.
On Tuesday, Mother Nature would produce another test as temperatures in the high 30's forced a late start due to frost. Unfortunately, the Wildcats were unable to heat up and catch Oklahoma City, posting a second round total of 296 to finish nine strokes back of the reigning National Champions. Josh Briere and Zack Ross led the team with rounds of 73, while Damon Salo carded 74, Matt Morin 75, and Brandon Meltzer 77.
Salo's two round total of 153 secured him a T-10th finish, while teammates Briere and Meltzer finished one stroke behind and T-14th.
The Wildcats will be back in Texas this weekend as they look to claw their way up the National rankings at the NAIA Contender hosted by Northwood University. the NAIA Contender will be played at the TPC Four Seasons, Las Colinas in Irving, Texas March 4th-5th.
