JWU Men’s Golf Takes Second at the Shootout in San Antonio; Rainville Places Second

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 27, 2018) – The Johnson & Wales men's golf team claimed second place in this year's Shootout in San Antonio held at TPC San Antonio February 25 and 26. The Wildcats posted a 15-over (292-288-299, 879); nine strokes behind tournament champion Oklahoma City (No. 4 in the latest GolfStat rankings).

The Wildcats finished the event three strokes ahead of third-place Our Lady of the Lake (292-291-299, 882). Rounding out the Top 5 were Taylor (296-291-302, 889) and Wayland Baptist (294-297-304, 895).  

The two-day, 14 team event was played on both the Canyons and Oaks Courses at TPC San Antonio with Monday's rounds held on the Canyons (par 72, 7,160) and Tuesday's final round on the Oaks (par 72, 7,034). The field featured 10 teams ranked in the top 50 in the latest GolfStats rankings: No. 2 Texas Wesleyan, No. 4 Oklahoma City, No. 6 Johnson & Wales (FL), No. 12 Southwest, No. 13 Wayland Baptist, No. 15 Taylor, No. 35 Our Lady of the Lake, No. 39 Milligan College, No. 42 Grand View, and No. 44 Kansas Wesleyan.

JWU was led by senior Alex Rainville, who placed second on the individual leaderboard with a 3-under (72-67-74, 213). The native St. Johnsbury, Vermont, posted his fifth Top-5 finished of the season, beating the likes of Rowan Lester (No. 1 ranked by GolfStat), Leo Mathard (No. 2 ranked by GolfStat), and Rupert Kaminski (No. 3 ranked by GolfStat). Jake Bauer finished tied for sixth with a 3-over (74-72-73, 219) followed Jens Bendikson, who placed 20th with a 7-over (72-75-76, 223). Cody Booska placed tied for 21st with an 8-over (74-74-76, 224) and Baylee Wise placed tied for 41st with a 19-over (76-76-83, 235). Playing as an individual, Sean Murray placed tied for 49th with a 23-over (81-80-78).  

With the second-place finish, the Wildcats have now registered five Top3 finishes this season.

The Wildcats will travel to Okatie, South Carolina, to take part in the Sand Shark Classic hosted by the USCB Sharks. The classic begins on Monday, March 5, and runs through Tuesday, March 6.
