MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Oct. 21, 2017) – Picking up an important point in the Sun Conference standings, the Johnson & Wales men's soccer team (7-4-1, 4-2-1 TSC) battled the Thomas University Night Hawks (5-7-2, 3-2-2 TSC) on Saturday afternoon from the Miami Shores Village Sports Complex.
Under tough conditions due to high winds and scattered showers, neither team created not much offense as a total of five shots were taken through the first 45 minutes.
Coming out of the break, JWU put pressure on the Night Hawk defense, scoring the first goal of the game in the 49th minute. Following a turnover in the TU area, Jonas Bukh netted beat Lee Howarth for the 1-0 advantage.
TU had a chance to level the score with a penalty kick attempt by Leo Thomas in the 64th minute. However, the shot sailed high keeping, the score at 1-0 in favor of JWU. The Night Hawks tied the match in the 88th minute when Thomas connected on a low cross by Malcom Frago Mayers to make the score 1-1.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net through a pair of overtime periods, resulting in the 1-1 draw.
Goalkeeper JC Diego had a strong match, making six saves on the afternoon.
For the game, Thomas held a slight edge in total shots, 15-14, while the Wildcats had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Wildcats will next travel to Miami Gardens to take on St. Thomas on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
