Men’s Soccer Claims 3-2 Win Over Webber International in TSC Opener Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Sept. 22, 2018)
– Two goals by freshman Fernando Arzeno led the Johnson & Wales men's soccer team (4-2-0, 1-0-0 TSC) to a 3-2 win over Webber International (4-2-2, 0-1-0 TSC) on Saturday afternoon from the Miami Shores Recreation Center.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a penalty-kick goal by Baxter Smith. However, JWU converted a penalty kick of its own in the final seconds of the half to tie the game at 1-all. Arzeno drew the foul in the final 10 seconds of the half and buried a shot past WIU goalkeeper Thomas Debladis for his second goal of the season.

The Wildcats took the lead in the in the 58th minute on a goal by sophomore Felipe Andrade. The goal, his second of the season was set up by senior Patricio Rolon, who found the midfielder in the area for the score. Rolon and sophomore Pablo Azzaro were award assists on the score.

Arzeno scored what would be the eventual game-winner in the 77th minute. On a throw-in by freshman Luciano Soto, Arezeno volleyed a shot from the left side of the area, catching Debladis off-guard and resulting in a 3-1 lead for the Wildcats.

Webber International pushed forward and pressured JWU, trying to pull even with the Wildcats. The Warriors cut the JWU lead to 3-2 with Baxter's second goal of the game in the 84th minute. However, that was as close as WIU got as the Wildcats claimed the 3-2 conference victory.

Saturday marked the first multiple-goal game of Arzeno's career and improved the Wildcats to 2-0-0 at home this season.

The Wildcats outshot the Warriors 24-18 in the contest, including an 11-7 edge in shots on goal.

Freshman Jhon Perez (3-0-0) earned his third win of the season, making five saves in 90 minutes of action.

JWU will travel to Ave Maria to take on the Gyrenes on Wednesday, September 26. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
