Men’s Soccer Rallies to Win in Overtime, 5-4

– Trailing by two goals with 19 minutes left in the match, the Johnson & Wales men's soccer team (7-3-0, 4-1-0) rallied to defeat the Florida Memorial Lions (1-6-0, 1-3-0 TSC), 5-4 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Tim Petersen netted the game-winner in the 94th minute with his second goal of the season. The native of Bariloche, Argentina, drilled the golden goal from the right side of the area after collecting a cross by senior Valentin Salinas from the left side of the field. Salinas' cross found Petersen, who was all alone after an FMU defender misjudged the pass. The assist was Salinas' fourth of the season.

The Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following an FMU goal in the 12th minute. Starting goalkeeper Jhon Perez made consecutive point-blank saves however the second rebounded off the first-year Wildcat right to a wide-open attacker. Salinas tied the match in the 32nd minute after dispossessing the ball from a Lion defender. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, took the ball into the FMU area and struck a shot from the left side, beating Angel Garcia. The goal was the sixth of the season for Salinas.

The Lions added a goal, late in the first half, as JWU went into halftime, trailing 2-1. FMU held a 13-4 edge in total shots (7-2 on net) in the first 45 minutes.

Florida Memorial took a two-goal lead in the 50th minute but a penalty-kick goal by freshman Fernando Arzeno in the 56th minute cut the Lion lead to 3-2. FMU regained its two-goal lead in the 71st minute following a fortuitous bounce off a corner kick that found backup keeper Gonzalo Rudolf out of position.

Arzeno converted his second PK attempt of the game to get JWU within one goal once again in the 78th minute. The score was the freshman's seventh of the season and fourth penalty-kick goal of 2018.

In the 83rd minute, senior Rodrigo Doben tied the match at 4-all. The product of Buenos Aires, Argentina, struck a shot from 30-yards out to beat FMU backup keeper Kasey Laventure. The goal was the third of the season for Doben. Freshman Nicolas Gomez was credited with his fourth assist of the season.

Neither team could produce the go-ahead goal in the remaining seven minutes, resulting in JWU's first overtime contest of the season. The Wildcats came out aggressive in the overtime period, resulting in the game-winner by Petersen in the 94th minute.

Rudolf was credited with his second win of the season, making one save in 42 minutes of action.

For the match, Florida Memorial held a 19-15 edge in total shots while the Wildcats held a 12-11 advantage on shots on goal.

The win improved JWU to a perfect 4-0 at home this season and gave the Wildcats their seventh win of the season.

JWU will travel to West Palm Beach, Florida, to take on Keiser University on Saturday, October 13. Game time is set for 10 a.m.
