LAKE WALES, Fla. (Nov. 3, 2017) – The Johnson & Wales women's basketball team (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Valley City State (2-0), 87-71, on Friday evening during the team's opening contest of the Lady Royal Classic on the campus of Warner University.

"It was a tough night tonight and we did not play well defensively," Head Coach Kymberly Hope said. "Point blank, Valley City State was the better team tonight. They executed offensively and made stops when they needed. We will regain our focus and have short-term memory as we now have to get mentally ready for Edward Waters tomorrow night."

JWU finished the night shooting 38.1 percent from the field (24-of-63), while the Vikings converted 36-of-64 (56.3 percent) of their shots. The Lady Wildcats were 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the charity stripe compared to VCS's 8-of-11 (72.7 percent). The Vikings out-rebounded JWU, 43-18, and produced a 15-5 edge in second-chance points. The Lady Wildcats recorded 10 steals in the contest as JWU scored 20 points off 15 Valley City State turnovers.

JoNae Gonzales led all JWU players with 21 points on 6-of-18 shooting, including a game-high five 3-pointers. It marked the second-straight game in which Gonzales scored 20-or-more points. Also scoring in double-figures was Tianna Ayulo, who registered 19 points on 6-of-17 shooting. The freshman forward made a game-high seven free throws and led JWU in rebounding with six. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was Diamond Williams, who notched 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting.

JWU will next face Edward Waters during day two of the Lady Royal Classic on Saturday, Nov. 4. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. ET.
