NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Nov. 16, 2017) – In a game that was tied 13 times and saw eight lead changes, it came down to the final minute of overtime as Johnson & Wales (3-3, 0-1 TSC) suffered a one-point loss, 87-86, to Coastal Georgia on Thursday evening.
Trailing by one point and under 30 seconds to play, JWU had one last chance to take the lead following a CGU turnover. However, time expired and the Wildcats dropped their conference opener.
Four players reached double-figures in scoring, including 21 points for Diamond Williams and 20 from Bevin Mays. Both Williams and Mays were each 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Williams shot 5-of-17 from the floor, while Mays was 3-of-8 with three 3-point buckets on the night. Mays also grabbed a season-high-tying eight rebounds versus the Mariners. Tiana Ayulo recorded her sixth-straight game with at least 19 points, shooting 5-of-15 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. The first-year forward also tallied a team-high 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was JoNae Gonzales, who had 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting and a game-high six assists.
The Wildcats finished the night shooting 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the floor and was 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from beyond the arc. CGU shot 49.2 percent from the field (30-of-61) and was 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from downtown.
Both teams combined for 78 trips to the free-throw line, as JWU went 38-of-44 and Coastal Georgia was 23-of-34. The Mariners had a 44-26 advantage in points in the paint, while the Wildcats outscored CGU 20-15 in second-chance points, holding a 44-37 edge in rebounding.
JWU will next host the Thomas Night Hawks on Saturday, Nov. 18. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
