MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Feb. 3, 2018) – Freshman Tianna Ayulo scored the go-ahead bucket with 10 seconds left in the game as the Johnson & Wales women's basketball team (9-15, 5-10 TSC) defeated the Florida Memorial Lions (13-9, 8-6 TSC), 65-64, on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing by six with 2:43 left in the game, JWU went on an 8-1 run capped off by Ayulo's layup in the final seconds for the team's fifth conference win of the season.
Ayulo ended the day with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor and 6-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. The first-year Wildcat also led JWU with eight rebounds. Diamond Williams added 10 points, draining 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to go along with a 3-point bucket. The Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, native led the squad with four assists. Joining Ayulo and Williams in double-digit scoring was Maxine Samuel, who scored 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 shooting from the line.
JWU finished the game shooting 38.8 percent from the floor (19-of-49) and 33.3 percent from 3-point range (5-of-15). FMU made 32.8 percent of its shots (22-of-67) from the field, including 20.0 percent from downtown (5-of-25). JWU kept the game close hitting on 22-of-29 attempts from the free-throw line. The Lions held a 39-32 edge in rebounding while the Wildcats scored 26 points off 24 Florida Memorial turnovers.
The Wildcats will host the Keiser Seahawks on Saturday, February 10. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
