Gonzales’ 20 Points Help JWU Down Ave Maria, 66-63, to Advance to the TSC Semifinals

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Feb. 20, 2018)JoNae Gonzales poured in a team-high 20 points to lead the Johnson & Wales women's basketball team (13-15, 8-10 TSC) to a 66-63 win over the No. 4-seeded Ave Maria Gyrenes (20-9, 11-7 TSC) in the Sun Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.

With the win, JWU will be making the program's first appearance in the TSC Semifinals.

The native of Richmond, California, was one of three Wildcats to score in double-figures in the contest. Gonzales shot 7-of-10 from the floor, including a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range for her fourth 20-point performance of the season. She also added five rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Freshman Tianna Ayulo contributed 19 points on 7-of-19 shooting with nine rebounds and three assists. Diamond Williams rounded out the team's leading scorers with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with four assists and five steals (both team highs). Alexis McClain led all Wildcats with 10 rebounds in the contest.

After a slow start by both teams in the first quarter, JWU used a strong second quarter to take a 30-24 lead heading into halftime. The Wildcats maintained their lead for the remainder of the game to advance to this year's semifinals.

JWU finished the game, shooting 41.7 percent from the floor (25-of-60) and 63.6 percent from 3-point range (7-of-11). Ave Maria converted 34.3 percent of its shots from the field (23-of-67) and was 5-of-17 from beyond the arc (29.4 percent). The Wildcats scored 10 points off 12 Gyrene turnovers and scored 20 points in the paint.  

The Wildcats will next travel to Lakeland, Florida, to take on the top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Southeastern Fire in the Sun Conference Semifinals on Friday, February 23. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
