NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2018) – Coming off an historic quarterfinal victory over Ave Maria this past week, the Johnson & Wales women's basketball team (13-15, 8-10 TSC) travel to Lakeland, Florida, to face the No.1-ranked team in the nation; the Southeastern Fire (27-0, 18-0 TSC); on Friday, February 23, in the Sun Conference semifinals. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. ET.
The Wildcats enter Friday's contest having won five straight following a 66-63 win at Ave Maria on Tuesday. The win gave JWU its first appearance in the TSC semifinals in program history. The Wildcats were led by junior JoNae Gonzales, who scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range. It was the native of Richmond, California's, fourth 20-point performance of the season.
The Wildcats come into Friday's game, averaging 70.8 points-per-game (No. 3 in the conference and No. 41 in the nation) on 39.4 percent shooting from the floor (No. 4 in the conference). JWU is shooting 30.0 percent from beyond the arc and is 73.4 percent from the free-throw line (No. 28 in the nation). The Wildcats are led offensively by freshman Tianna Ayulo, who comes into this week's action averaging 17.0 points-per-game (No. 4 in the conference and No. 35 in the nation). The native of Hollywood, Florida, is shooting 45.3 percent from the floor (No. 5 in the conference) and leads the team in rebounding, averaging 8.1 boards-per-game (No. 4 in the conference and No. 37 in the nation). Joining Ayulo in double-digit scoring is Diamond Williams, who is averaging 16.3 points-per-game (No. 5 in the conference and No. 42 in the nation) on 40.6 percent shooting from the floor. Williams leads the team in total steals (72) which ranks No. 28 in the nation. She also is the team's top free-throw shooter with an 86.1 shooting percentage on the year (No. 11 in the nation).
