Women’s Basketball Suffers 60-50 Season-Opening Loss to UVI

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Oct. 31, 2018)
– The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (0-1) fell to the U.S. Virgin Islands Buccaneers (1-1), 60-50, in the team's 2018-19 season opener on Wednesday evening.

After trailing by seven at the half (35-28), the Wildcats fell into a bigger hole as UVI outscored JWU 18-7 to take a 53-35 lead through three-quarters of action. The Wildcats struggled in the third, shooting 21.4 percent from the floor (3-of-14) but responded in the fourth, converting 46.7 percent of their shots in the final frame. JWU cut into the Buccaneers lead in the fourth but it was not enough as the Wildcats suffered the 10-point loss.

Sophomore Tianna Ayulo led all Wildcats with 16 points and seven rebounds. The native of Hollywood, Florida, shot 7-of-14 from the floor and was 2-of-4 from 3-point range. Freshman Jordan McDuffie added nine while sophomore Alexis McClain contributed eight. Both shot 4-of-7 from the floor. Freshman Ayshia Scott led JWU with five assists to go along with five points. Fellow freshman Carol Hadnot notched a game-high six steals in 16 minutes of action.

The Wildcats ended the contest shooting 37.9 percent from the floor to 34.8 percent for UVI. The Buccaneers outrebounded the Wildcats 50-31 and scored eight more second-chance points that JWU. The difference was ultimately from beyond the arc as the Buccaneers drained three more treys than the Wildcats in the game.

JWU will host the Florida National Conquistadors on Tuesday, November 6. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. and will part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
