Women’s Basketball Drops Conference Opener, 73-65

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (Nov. 15, 2018)
– The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (1-2, 0-1 TSC) dropped its Sun Conference opener at Coastal Georgia (4-3, 1-0 TSC), 73-65, on Thursday evening.

The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Mariners outscored the Wildcats 22-15 in the third stanza. JWU shot 50.0 percent from the floor (7-of-14) in the third but, CCG converted two more buckets, including a trey, and made two more free throws than JWU to erase the Wildcat's one-point lead at the half. The Mariners outrebounded the Wildcats in the third, 11-7, as CCG posted six second-chance points.

Sophomore Tianna Ayulo and senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith led the Wildcats with 15 points each. Ayulo added 13 boards for her second double-double of the season. Gonzales-Smith shot 5-of-17 from the floor and was 2-of-7 from 3-point range while Ayulo converted 7-of-21 from the floor and was 1-of-3 from downtown. Also reaching double-figures in scoring was freshman Jordan McDuffie, who notched a career-high 13 points on three made buckets and a 6-of-7 performance from the line. McDuffie also grabbed eight rebounds in the contest.

For the game, JWU shot 30.4 percent from the floor (24-of-79) and was 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range. The Mariners made 26-of-57 shots from the floor (45.6 percent) and converted 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from downtown. CCG held a 43-37 edge in rebounds, including a 30-19 advantage on the defensive glass.

The Wildcats will head to Thomasville, Georgia, to take on the Thomas Night Hawks on Saturday, November 17. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
