W. Soccer Lose Overtime Thriller
After a heart breaking loss this past Thursday night to conference opponent Ave Maria University, 1-0, the Lady Wildcats (0-8-0, TSC 0-4-0) had a quick turnaround as they looked to get their first conference win against Southeastern University Fire (4-5-0, TSC 3-1-0) on Monday night.
Just like Thursday night, the crowd came out to cheer on the Lady Wildcats and made it an incredible atmosphere. The Southeastern Fire were also coming off a tough loss, as they dropped a 4-1 decision to Thomas University. The loss to Thomas proved to be a tough one, as it saw the Fire score first, but they could not answer as Thomas tallied four unanswered goals.
"We knew it would be a well fought game," commented JWU Head Coach Eric Dobrzanski. "Both teams were eager to move on from tough losses, I know we wanted to prove that we had more to offer and could play a full 90 minutes."
The game would be back and forth in the first half, but ended tied 0-0. The second half would start the same way, but momentum changed when Fire Forward Jessica Crowe blasted a shot from outside the eighteen yard box to the right corner. "It was an excellent strike, you have to give her credit, she beat two of our defenders and put her hard work away. GK Elizabeth Haley could not have done anything about that strike," added Dobrzanski.
The goal left the Lady Wildcats stunned but not out. As they would tie the game up 7 minutes later, with a goal from Forward Orniela Pitt (FR) as she received a good pass from Paola Lopategui (FR). The goal was Pitt's first and gave JWU a much needed lift. The final 20 minutes would settle down and take the two teams into overtime.
In overtime the Lady Wildcats would find themselves with a quality opportunity as they were awarded a corner kick at the start. Unfortunately they could not capitalize and the Fire's GK Karleigh Smoak did a good job with the service. A few minutes later the Fire would capitalize on their only opportunity, as they exploited the JWU backline and caught them in transition. The strike beat JWU GK Elizabeth Haley and ended the game.
"It's an incredibly tough loss, but we battled and executed the game plan. We knew what we needed to do and I felt like we took what we learned from the loss to Ave Maria, on Thursday night, and applied it. As long as we continue to grow and learn, we will eventually find ourselves on the winning side of these games. I just cannot say enough about this team. They did not make excuses or feel sorry for themselves after the goal. We found a way to get back into the game and earned everything. I cannot complain about that effort and I know the players feel and see the improvement," finished Dobrzanski.
Women's Soccer will now turn their attention to St. Thomas University (5-4-0, TSC 2-2-0), as the Lady Wildcats will take the short trip over to Miami Gardens to face the Bobcats on Friday Oct. 7th at 4pm. JWU will then have a very quick turn around as they play host to the College of the Bahamas the very next day, Saturday Oct. 8th at 12:30pm. Saturday's game will be at North Miami Stadium and Coach Dobrzanski hopes that fans and members of "The Pac" will join the team as they look for a home win.
