W. Soccer Shocks Webber International University
Following an impressive 7-0 win over conference opponent University of South Carolina-Beaufort (1-13-0, TSC 0-9-0), the Lady Wildcats (3-11-0, TSC 2-7-0) were looking for their second victory of the week and to make another piece of history. On Sunday Oct. 18th against USCB, JWU recorded its first Sun Conference victory in the young programs history. On Friday Oct. 21st they upset conference foe Webber International University (7-9-0, TSC 3-5-0), 3-1, to record the programs first two game win streak.
The game was played at Tamiami Park in Kendall, FL and kicked off at 7:30pm. Last year the game was played in Lake Wales, FL and ended in a 4-0 WIU victory. The action would start in the fifth minute as JWU Forward Orniela Pitt (Fr.) would find the back of the net, recording her fifth goal of the season. The lead would not last long as the Warriors of Webber International would even the score just five minutes later. The half would end 0-0, with Webber having the majority of the chances.
The second half would quickly begin with the Warriors getting a golden opportunity to take the lead as they were awarded a penalty kick. The Lady Wildcats caught a break when the Warrior's player hit the goal post on the penalty kick attempt. The rest of the half would see both teams having opportunities, but no goals.
As the game hit the 85th minute mark the Lady Wildcats turned the game upside down. First, when Forward Darcilyn Butala (Fr.) forced a turnover from the WIU backline and took it upon herself to take a shot from 20 yards out that beat the Warriors goalkeeper. With a 2-1 lead and very little time left the Warriors pressed hard looking for the equalizer. With only two minutes left the Lady Wildcats were awarded a free kick at midfield. Center Back Samantha Connealy (Fr.) lofted a ball over the Warriors backline, and the Warriors goalkeeper was slow off her line. The goalkeepers hesitation allowed JWU Midfielder Tara Barrett (Jr.) to beat her when the ball bounced. Barrett finished it past the goalkeeper with a quick header.
The goal would seal the victory for the Lady Wildcats, which would record their second victory of the week. Along with their second Sun Conference victory. "The ladies did an unbelievable job tonight, this was a big win for our program," Head Coach Eric Dobrzanski remarked. "They refused to give in and they earned a huge victory. I could not be more proud of them. We found a way to win and all the credit goes to these players. I hope we can build on this win and finish the season strong."
The Lady Wildcats will now turn their attention to Warner University, for another conference face off. The game will be played on Sunday Oct. 23rd at North Miami Stadium, kickoff is set for 1pm.
