@JWUWSoccerNM Opens 2017 Season with 5-0 Win Over Montreat College

The Lady Wildcats women's soccer team (1-0) started their 2017 campaign with a 5-0 win over the host Montreat College Cavaliers (0-1).  The game was the first of the season for both teams, and the Lady Wildcats got on the scoreboard early with a goal from Freshman Savannah Jackson in the 2nd minute of the match.

The team's second goal would come in the 31st minute from Senior Captain Sydney Smedley, off of an assist from Jr. Danielle Ritter.  The Lady Wildcats would carry and 2-0 advantage into the halftime break, along with outshooting the Cavaliers 12-2.

JWU would find the back of the net 10 minutes into the second half, as Savannah Jackson scored her second goal of the game.  In the 61st minute the team would make the lead 4-0, as Danielle Ritter scored off a corner kick service from Jr. Caterina Yibirin.  Yibirin would add another assist to her night in the 70th minute when So. Maria Salas scored off a set piece. Goalkeepers Ashley Buchanan and Chelsie Randolph each made key saves to earn the combined shutout.

"I thought this was a very good start for us," commented Head Coach Eric Dobrzanski.  "We wanted to be more decisive in the final third of the field and I think we did that.  Aside from the goals, we got so many very good performances.  I thought our three midfielders really controlled the tempo and did a great job moving the ball and switching the point of attack. I am very pleased by the overall performance, so many players stepped up and I know as a team we got better tonight.  We just want to get better every day and prepare ourselves for conference play."

The Lady Wildcats stay on the road for a match against NAIA opponent Middle Georgia State University on Monday August 21st, kickoff is set for 12pm.
