Lady Wildcats Suffer Tough 2-1 Loss at Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla. (Oct. 18, 2017) – With the 2017 regular season winding down, the Johnson & Wales women's soccer team traveled to Lake Wales, Florida, to take on the Warner Royals as both teams were looking to get one step closer to earning a berth in the 2017 Sun Conference Tournament. A second-half goal by the Royals (7-4, 5-3 TSC) handed the Lady Wildcats (7-6, 4-4 TSC) a 2-1 loss on Wednesday evening at Royals Field.   

JWU controlled most of the match, out-shooting Warner, 16-5, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Savannah Jackson gave the Lady Wildcats an early 1-0 lead with her team-leading 15th goal of the season in the 35th minute. The native of Davenport, Florida, is currently second in the Sun Conference in goals and points (31). Nine minutes later the Royals tied the match, 1-1, with a goal by Rachel DeWeerd in the 44th minute.

Both squads entered halftime tied at 1-all. JWU held a 7-3 advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes.

The Lady Wildcats came out in the second half and continued peppering the Warner defense, recording six shots in the first 17 minutes of the stanza. However, the Royals broke the draw with a goal by Ester Silva in the 66th minute.

JWU tried to respond but could not string enough offense together to find the equalizer, falling in the conference road contest, 2-1.

The Lady Wildcats will next travel to Thomasville, Georgia, to take on Thomas University on Saturday, Oct. 21. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
