NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Aug. 20, 2018) –
Led by a two-goal performance by sophomore Savannah Jackson, the Johnson & Wales women's soccer team (1-0) defeated the Florida National Conquistadors (0-1), 3-2, on Monday afternoon from the Miami Shores Recreation Complex.

"I thought we did a good job building out of the back," Head Coach Eric Dobrzanski said. "I thought we were a little off on the timing of our runs in the final third. We stopped runs in the final third. We were content with making one run and never making a second run. There were a lot of things that you would expect in a season opener but I think the disappointing part is that we gave up two goals in transition."

Kicking off the 10th season of JWU women's soccer, the Wildcat found themselves in an early hole as Florida National's D'Yolanda Pineda struck a shot past starting goalkeeper Ashley Buchanan in the 11th minute. JWU responded with its first score of the season as Annet Cea registered the equalizer in the 15th minute. The goal came off the foot of Cea from the center of the area after collecting the ball from a cross that was deflected by an FNU defender. The score was the first of the season for the fourth-year Wildcat and the third of her career.

Jackson gave JWU a 2-1 lead in the 29th minute, scoring the first of her two goals of the contest with a blistering shot past FNU goalkeeper Rashelle Gomez. The score extended the sophomore's streak of consecutive games with a goal to four (dating back to last season).

In the 53rd minute, the Conquistadors tied the game off a goal by Noriann Gaviria. Following FNU's only corner of the game, Pineda found Gaviria in the area, who chipped a shot past first-year goalkeeper Kellie Fitzpatrick to draw the game even, 2-2.

Minutes later the game was halted due to lightning in the area. After a 30-minute delay, the game resumed and JWU continued to push for the go-ahead goal. In the 63rd minute, Yaneli Montes drew a foul in the area which resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for the Wildcats. Jackson, who notched the sixth multi-goal game of her career, struck the goal-ahead goal on a successful PK attempt in the 65th minute.

FNU tried to make one last push to tie the game but was unsuccessful as JWU claimed the 3-2 victory.

The win marked the team's fifth-straight, season-opening win and improved the Wildcats to 6-0-1 over the last seven season openers.

For the match, JWU outshot FNU, 36-5, with a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Wildcats also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Jackson led the match with 12 total shots and four on net. Nine difference Wildcats produced at least one shot in the contest with five shooting on net two-or-more time.

Fitzpatrick (1-0) was credited with the first win of her JWU career, making two saves in 45 minutes of action. Buchanan played the first 45, making her eighth-career start. FNU's Gomez earned the loss (0-1), making nine save in 90 minutes in net.

The Wildcats will next hit the road for an exhibition contest at Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, August 25. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. from West Palm Beach, Florida.
