Wildcats Blank Lady Royals for School-Record Fifth Conference Win of the Season

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Oct. 17, 2018)
– Jumping out to a 1-0 lead in 13th minute and never looking back, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's soccer team (8-5-0, 5-3-0 TSC) earned a school-record fifth Sun Conference win of the season, blanking the Warner Lady Royals (10-4-1, 6-2-0 TSC), 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon from the Miami Shores Recreation Complex.

Senior Carissa Sanchez notched her fifth goal of the season with the eventual game-winner in the 13th minute, scoring on a breakaway following a long pass by defender Tyler Einsmann. Einsmann, who received a pass from senior Caterina Yibirin, sent a pass behind the Warner backline which Sanchez collected. The Miami native beat goalkeeper Sarah Bergkvist to give the Wildcats the early 1-0 lead. Both Einsmann and Yibirin were credited with assists on the goal.

Sophomore Savannah Jackson made history in the 45th minute, scoring her 20th goal of the season to extend the JWU lead to 2-0. Jackson became the first Wildcat in program history to net 20-or-more goal in a single season. The native of Davenport, Florida, weaved her way through the Lady Royal defense, slotting a shot past Bergkvist from the left side to give JWU a two-goal advantage. Senior Annet Cea earned her fourth assist of the season on the play.

The Wildcats held a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime. JWU outshot Warner 10-5 in the first 45 minutes.

JWU maintain control of the match in the second half despite more offensive pressure by the Lady Royals.

The Wildcats put the match away with an 89th-minute goal by Jackson – her eighth multi-goal game of the season. Jackson corralled the ball from the Warner defense in the Lady Royal third of the field. The second-year Wildcat made her way into Warner's area and blasted a shot to the right of Bergkvist to make the score 3-0.

Freshman Kellie Fitzpatrick (8-4-0) claimed her third shutout of the season, making six saves in the victory.

For the game, JWU outshot Warner 20-13 (7-6 on net) and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

JWU will host Thomas on Saturday, October 20, in the Wildcats final home game of the 2018 regular season. Prior to the match, JWU will honor its senior class. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
