Volleyball Drops a Pair of Matches During First Day of Running Eagles Classic

– The Johnson & Wales volleyball team (3-3) dropped a pair of matches during the first day of the 2018 Running Eagle Classic hosted by Life University on Friday.

The Wildcats fell, 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20), to the Freed-Hardeman Lions (1-1) during the team's first match of the two-day tournament. Hitting .138 for the match, JWU was led by junior Sharell Nairn and sophomore Savannah Swenson, who each posted 14 kills versus the Lions. Swenson also led the squad in digs, setting a season-high with 17 in the contest. It also marked Swenson's 12th double-double of her JWU career. Freshman Vanessa Orozco notched a team-high 32 assists to go along with 10 digs for her second double-double of the year.

JWU looked to rebound from the 3-1 loss with an early evening match versus Truett McConnell. The Wildcats battled the Bears, drawing the match even, 2-2. In the fifth and final set, JWU trailed 11-4 but rallied to pull within one point at 15-14. However, TMU scored the match-clinching point as the Wildcats fell, 3-2 (25-19, 27-29, 25-14, 24-26, 16-14). Junior Sierra Mooney posted a team-best 19 kills and was one of three Wildcats to reach double-figures in kills (Swenson 14, Nairn 12). JWU had five players reach double-digits in digs led by Orozco, who posted 22 in the match. The native of Kissimmee also led the team with 37 assists for her second double-double of the day. Also registering her second double-double of the tournament was Swenson, who recorded 17 digs versus the Bears.

The Wildcats will close out the 2018 Running Eagle Classic with two matches on Saturday. The Wildcats will first take on Tennessee Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. contest with Brenau.
