Volleyball Makes History; Wins First Conference Match in Program History

– The Johnson & Wales volleyball team (8-9, 1-5 TSC) made program history, earning the team's first Sun Conference victory, downing Ave Maria (3-8, 1-5 TSC), 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-20), on Wednesday evening.

The Wildcats recorded 39 kills on a .169 team hitting percentage en route to the 3-0 sweep. JWU was led by sophomore Savannah Swenson and junior Sharell Nairn, who each posted 12 kills in the match. Swenson finished the match with a .200 attack percentage while Nairn tallied a hitting percentage of .212.

Three Wildcats recorded double-figures in digs with freshman Vanessa Orozco leading the way with 16 followed by sophomore Bianca Torres (15) and junior Vitoria Nicolau (12). Orozco also notched a team-high 31 assists for her seventh double-double of the season.

JWU recorded 6.0 total team blocks as sophomore Alexis McClain and junior Sierra Mooney had three solo blocks each in the match.

For the match, JWU held an edge in total kills, 39-34, and posted 61 digs to Ave Maria's 57. Defensively, the Wildcats held the Gyrenes to a .085 hitting percentage in the contest.

The Wildcats return home to host Coastal Georgia on Saturday, September 29. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
