NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Nov. 5, 2018) – Men's soccer freshman Fernando Arzeno and women's soccer sophomore Savannah Jackson have been named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week for the week ending November 4, the Athletic Department announced on Monday.
The Wildcats of the Week honor is a weekly award given to the top performing student-athlete among the 11 intercollegiate sports sponsored at JWU. Awarded to the top male and female student-athlete each week by the JWU Athletic Department, those named the Wildcat of the Week will become eligible to be named the Sergio's Player of the Month for the corresponding month.
Arzeno, a freshman forward, registered two goals, including the game-winner as the Wildcats earned the program's first Sun Conference Tournament victory with a 3-2 win at St. Thomas on Saturday. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, notched his second-straight, multiple-goal game to lead JWU to its first win over the Bobcats since the 2013 season. Arzeno broke a scoreless tie in the 51st minute with his 11th goal of the season. He later scored the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner, converting a penalty-kick attempt in the 87th minute. The PK goal was his sixth of the season (single-season JWU record). The first-year forward has tallied 12 goals and one assist for 25 points. His 12 goals and 25 points in 2018 are single-season records for the Wildcats as Arzeno is the first JWU player to reach double-digits in goals since the 2013 season (Pedro Codo -11; Victor Codo – 11). Arzeno currently ranks tied for No. 4 in the conference in points-per-game (1.92 – No. 41 in the nation) and No. 3 in the conference in goals-per-contest (0.92 – No. 23 in the nation).
Jackson, a sophomore striker, registered two goals and one assist to lead the Wildcats to a 3-0 win over Warner in the Sun Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday. The native of Davenport, Florida, became the first JWU player to reach the 25-goal plateau in a single season, with goal No. 25 in the second minute followed by her 26th of 2018 in the 32nd. She also notched her fifth assist of the season on a score by Carissa Sanchez in the eighth minute. The game marked her 10th multiple-goal contest of the year. She was also credited with her eighth game-winning goal of the season (No. 4 in the nation). On the year, Jackson has tallied 26 goals and five assists for 57 points. The second-year Wildcat currently ranks No. 2 in the conference in points-per-game (3.56 – No. 4 in the nation) and No. 3 in the conference in goals-per-contest (3.56 – No. 4 in the nation).
Honorable mention: Kellie Fitzpatrick (women's soccer) – Made nine saves to earn fourth shutout of the season; Carissa Sanchez (women's soccer) – Scored a goal and recorded two assists versus Warner; Cody Booska (men's golf) – Finished tied for ninth with a 3-over at the Dave Adamonis Sr Invitational; Tianna Ayulo (women's basketball) – Registered team-highs in points (16) and rebounds (7) in season opener; Carol Hadnot (women's basketball) – Tallied six steals in 16 minutes of action in JWU debut; Jacknelson Joseph (men's basketball) – Averaged 14.0 points and 4.0 boards during Arizona road trip; Ruben Tejeda (men's soccer) – Scored go-ahead goal in 69th minute with powerful shot from well outside the area.
