Dwayne Adams and JoNae Gonzales-Smith Named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Dec. 17, 2018) – Men's basketball freshman Dwayne Adams and women's basketball senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith have been named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week for the week ending December 16, the Athletic Department announced on Monday.

The Wildcats of the Week honor is a weekly award given to the top performing student-athlete among the 11 intercollegiate sports sponsored at JWU. Awarded to the top male and female student-athlete each week by the JWU Athletic Department, those named the Wildcat of the Week will become eligible to be named the Sergio's Player of the Month for the corresponding month. 

Adams, a freshman guard, led the Wildcats with 18 on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and 5-of-5 shooting from the free-throw line this past week. The native of Miami notched his eighth game of 10-or-more points versus the Virgin Islands on Friday while registering four rebounds and a team-high four assists. On the year, Adams is averaging a team-high 10.0 points-per-game on 39.6 percent shooting from the floor (40-of-101). He is averaging 3.9 rebounds-per-contest (second on the team) and leads JWU in assists, averaging 2.8 per contest.

Gonzales-Smith, a senior guard, finished the week leading the Wildcats with 19 points on 6-of-18 shooting, including five buckets from 3-point range. The native of Richmond, California, hit a crucial shot the tie the game late versus (rv) Briar Cliff on Sunday before the Chargers hit the game-winner in the final seconds. Gonzales-Smith also collected seven rebounds and dished out five assists. On the year, the second-year Wildcat is averaging 17.0 points-per-game (No. 7 in the conference and No. 30 in the nation) on 38.2 percent shooting from the floor (No. 11 in the conference). She leads the team with 24 treys, averaging 2.00 per game (No. 10 in the conference). Averaging 4.8 rebounds-per-contest, Gonzales-Smith is second on the team in steals (20) and assists (39). The team leader in free-throw percentage (85.0 percent), Gonzales-Smith ranks second in the conference and 24th in the nation.

Honorable mention: Tianna Ayulo (women's basketball) – Posted 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds versus Briar Cliff; Jordan McDuffie (women's basketball) – Contributed 13 points, four assists, and three steals on Sunday; Jacknelson Joseph (men's basketball) – Scored 17 points versus UVI.
