Dwayne Adams and JoNae Gonzales-Smith Named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2019) – Men's basketball freshman Dwayne Adams and women's basketball senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith have been named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week for the week ending January 6, the Athletic Department announced on Monday.

The Wildcats of the Week honor is a weekly award given to the top performing student-athlete among the 11 intercollegiate sports sponsored at JWU. Awarded to the top male and female student-athlete each week by the JWU Athletic Department, those named the Wildcat of the Week will become eligible to be named the Sergio's Player of the Month for the corresponding month. 

Adams, a freshman guard, scored a team-high 15 points versus the Keiser Seahawks on Saturday. The native of Miami finished 6-of-13 from the floor (46.2 percent) and was 3-of-6 from 3-point range (50.0 percent) to record his 11th double-digit scoring performance of the season. Adams also dished out a team-high six assists and recorded three steals on the afternoon. His six assists were one shy of his career high (7 versus Mitchell on December 19, 2018) and marked his sixth-straight game of four-or-more assists. On the year, Adams is averaging a team-high 11.9 points-per-game (No. 15 in the conference) on 40.1 percent shooting from the floor. He is the team leader in steals (18) and assists (48) while averaging 3.4 assists-per-contest (No. 6 in the conference).

Gonzales-Smith, a senior guard, tied a career-high in points, scoring 32 versus Keiser to lead the Wildcats to their first conference win of the season on Saturday. The native of Richmond, California, shot an impressive 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from the floor and drained 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from 3-point range en route to her second 30-point outing of the season. Her 32 points tied her previous high set back on November 20, 2018 (versus Florida National). The eight made 3-point buckets were the most by a JWU Wildcat since the 2010-2011 season (Ashley Foe - 9 versus Edward Waters on January 21, 2011). Gonzales-Smith also grabbed five rebounds and recorded a game-high four steals versus the Seahawks. Making 2-of-2 from the free-throw line, Gonzales-Smith increased her team-leading free-throw percentage to 83.3 percent (No. 2 in the conference and No. 21 in the nation). On the year, Gonzales-Smith is averaging 17.1 points-per-game (No. 8 in the conference and No. 29 in the nation). With 35 made 3-pointers this season, she is averaging 2.33 treys-made-per-contest (No. 7 in the conference and No. 47 in the nation).  

Honorable mention: Tianna Ayulo (women's basketball) – Scored a career-high 30 points versus Keiser; Jordan McDuffie (women's basketball) – Tied her career-high in assists with five versus the Seahawks; Michael Stuart (men's basketball) – Scored 14 points versus Keiser; Willem Vermylen (men's basketball) – Had nine points, four rebounds and a game-high two blocks versus the Seahawks.
