JoNae Gonzales-Smith and Dylan McHugh Named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2019) – Women's basketball senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith and men's basketball junior Dylan McHugh have been named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week for the week ending January 27, the Athletic Department announced on Monday.

The Wildcats of the Week honor is a weekly award given to the top performing student-athlete among the 11 intercollegiate sports sponsored at JWU. Awarded to the top male and female student-athlete each week by the JWU Athletic Department, those named the Wildcat of the Week will become eligible to be named the Sergio's Player of the Month for the corresponding month. 

Gonzales-Smith, a senior guard, averaged 23.5 points-per-game and team-leading 8.0 rebounds-per-contest during last week's action. The native of Richmond, California, also tallied 12 assists while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and 52.6 percent from 3-point range. The second-year Wildcat drained a team-high 10 3-pointers to increase her season total to 56 (2.67 per game - No. 5 in the conference and No. 19 in the nation). She opened the week with her third 30-point outing of the season, scoring 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting versus Ave Maria. Gonzales-Smith grabbed nine boards and recorded four assists versus the Gyrenes. Two days later versus Southeastern, Gonzales-Smith contributed 17 points, shooting 5-of-12 from the floor (all five shots made from downtown). She collected seven rebounds and dished out a season-high eight assists in the contest. On the year, Gonzales-Smith is averaging 17.0 points-per-game (No. 7 in the conference), 5.3 rebounds-per-contest (No. 19 in the conference) and 3.6 assists-per-game (No. 7 in the conference). She is shooting 40.0 percent from the floor (No. 11 in the conference) and 35.7 percent from 3-point range (No. 8 in the conference).

McHugh, a junior guard, came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor versus Southeastern on Saturday. The native of Orlando, Florida, converted 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range to finish the afternoon for the second double-figure scoring outing of his career. The 14 points paced the team as McHugh shot 71.4 percent in the contest. The four made 3-pointers, as well as the five made baskets, were both career-highs for the Wildcat guard. He also registered one rebound and two assists in 20 minutes of action. On the year, McHugh has scored 53 points with 11 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals in 15 appearances this season. He is shooting 32.7 percent from the floor and 31.9 percent from long range.

Honorable mention: Tianna Ayulo (women's basketball) – Averaged 26.5 points-per-game and 5.5 rebounds-per-contest; Tristan Stephens (men's basketball) – Averaged 10.0 points-per-game and 4.5 boards-per-contest; Dwayne Adams (men's basketball) – Scored 12.5 points-per-game.
