Jacknelson Joseph and JoNae Gonzales-Smith Named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Feb. 18, 2019) – Men's basketball senior Jacknelson Joseph and women's basketball senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith have been named JWU Athletics Wildcats of the Week for the week ending February 18, the Athletic Department announced on Monday.

The Wildcats of the Week honor is a weekly award given to the top performing student-athlete among the 11 intercollegiate sports sponsored at JWU. Awarded to the top male and female student-athlete each week by the JWU Athletic Department, those named the Wildcat of the Week will become eligible to be named the Sergio's Player of the Month for the corresponding month. 

Joseph, a senior guard, led the Wildcats to a 1-1 mark this past week, including a win over No. 16 Warner. The native of Miami averaging 15.0 points-per-game on 50.0 percent shooting from the floor. Joseph drained a team-high five 3-point buckets last week, shooting 41.7 percent from downtown. The senior guard averaging 3.0 rebounds-per-contest while dishing out five assists and recording two steals. Joseph capped off the week with a 21-point performance versus the Royals in the Wildcat's season finale, shooting 8-of-15 from the floor. He hit on 4-of-8 attempts from 3-point land en route to his third 20-point outing of the season. He also assisted on five buckets versus WU while grabbing five boards. On the year, Joseph averaging 10.4 points-per-game and 3.6 rebounds-per-contest. He shot 38.4 percent from the floor and made 35.1 percent of his attempts from long range. He finished the 2018-19 campaign with 33 assists and 25 steals.

Gonzales-Smith, a senior guard, guided JWU to a 1-1 record last week to close out the 2018-19 season. The native of Richmond, California, averaged 27.0 points-per-game and 9.0 rebounds-per-contest while shooting 52.6 percent from the floor. The senior guard nailed nine 3-pointers last week, shooting 47.4 percent from downtown. She also dished out 11 assists, recorded a blocked shot and registered a steal in 79 minutes of action. She opened the week posting 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the floor at Webber International while draining five treys in the contest to go along with eight rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Two days later Gonzales-Smith led all Wildcats with 29 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor, including 7-of-11 from 3-point land versus Warner. She grabbed 10 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season. The 29-point outing marked the ninth time in 2018-19 that Gonzales-Smith registered 20-or-more points in a game. She also dished out four assists. On the year, Gonzales-Smith averaged 18.1 points-per-game (No. 4 in the conference and No. 17 in the nation) and 5.7 rebounds-per-contest. She shot 42.0 percent from the floor (No. 9 in the conference) and 37.9 percent from 3-point range (No. 5 in the conference and No. 45 in the nation). Gonzales-Smith averaged 2.96 treys-per-game good for No. 3 in the conference and No. 14 in the nation). She closed out the 2018-19 season with 94 assists and 37 steals.

Honorable mention: Alexis McClain (women's basketball) – Averaged 11.0 points- and 9.0 rebounds-per-contest; Tianna Ayulo (women's basketball) – Scored 9.5 points-per-game and averaged 10.5 rebounds-per-contest; Ayshia Scott (women's basketball) – Posted 11.0 points-per-game; Jordan Martin (men's basketball) – Averaged 13.0 points-per-game.
