NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (July 3, 2019) – Success in academics is a key focus of the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) Athletic Department. During the 2018-19 academic year, JWU set a new bar for excellence, posting one of the highest cumulative grade point average in the department's history with a 3.11.
"We have had a tremendous year in JWU Athletics and one of the biggest accomplishments is the success our student-athletes have had in the classroom," JWU Director of Athletics Dave Griffore said. "In order to achieve this goal it's critical for our student-athletes, coaches and staff to understand the importance of academics. This is evident by this year's overall GPA and I'm extremely proud of our department."
In all, five teams posted cumulative GPAs over 3.0, including volleyball, women's basketball, men's golf, women's soccer, and men's soccer.
Individually, JWU student-athletes produced perfect 4.0 GPAs 37 times over the year's three terms, garnered 15 academic all-conference award winners, earned nine NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and produced five 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District I® Team, selected by CoSIDA honorees.
Back in December, women's soccer players Audrey Gant (first team) and Savannah Jackson (second team) became the first Wildcats in school history to be named Academic All-Americans® (2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® NAIA soccer teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America [CoSIDA]).
