NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (September 4, 2019) – Women's soccer junior Savannah Jackson has been named JWU Athletics Wildcat of the Week for the week ending August 31 announced on Wednesday.
The Wildcats of the Week honor is a weekly award given to the top performing student-athlete among the 11 intercollegiate sports sponsored at JWU. Awarded to the top male and female student-athlete each week by the JWU Athletic Department, those named the Wildcat of the Week will become eligible to be named the Sergio's Player of the Month for the corresponding month.
Jackson, a junior forward, was named this week's Sun Conference Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Wildcats to a 2-0 record this past week while increasing her nation-leading goal-scoring total to 11. The native of Winter Haven, Florida, began the week scoring a school-record five goals in a 6-2 win at Life (Ga.) on Tuesday, August 27. Her first goal of the contest, scored in the 34th minute was the 50th goal of her JWU career. Having set the school mark for goals in a game during her previous outing, Jackson rattled off four more scores to total five versus the Eagles. Two days later, Jackson netted both goals in a 2-1 win at Brenau (Ga.), notching the 19th multiple-goal game of her career. Recording both game-winning goals this past week, Jackson leads the nation with three game-winning goals and has registered 17 for her career. She current leads the nation in goals (11), points (22), game-winning goals (3) and game-winning goals-per-match (1.00). Because of her performances this past week, JWU has improved to 3-0-0 to start the season for only the second time in school history.
Honorable mention: Denise Mendoza (women's soccer) – Claimed a pair of victories this past week as JWU improved to 3-0-0 to start the season for just the second time in school history; Desiree Birriel (volleyball) – Recorded 64 assists and 36 digs this past week for the JWU Wildcats; Sharell Nairn (volleyball) – Recorded team-high in digs (37), total blocks (4.0), and kills (37); Sierra Mooney (volleyball) – ended the week, averaging 2.42 kills-per-set with a hitting percentage of .306.
