JWU Athletics Caps 2019-2020 School Year with Championship Performance in the Classroom

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (June 22, 2020) – Being a champion on the field/court and in the classroom isn't just a motto at JWU, it's reality. The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) Athletic Department capped off a historic 2019-2020 season with one of the program's top grade point averages in school history, posting an overall 3.30.

"I could not be more proud of our student-athletes and staff for this great achievement," JWU Director of Athletics Dave Griffore said. "Academics is our top priority here in the department, and to see them thrive this past year is extremely rewarding for all."

In all, eight teams posted cumulative GPAs of 3.0-or-higher, including women's track & field, men's track & field, women's golf, men's golf, women's soccer, men's soccer, women's basketball, and volleyball. Each team is expected to be recognized as an NAIA Scholar Team (scheduled to be announced sometime later this summer).

Individually, the Wildcats saw increases across the board from a year ago with 40 JWU student-athletes producing perfect 4.0 GPAs 69 times over the year's three terms (42 times a year ago) and 23 academic all-conference award winners (15 during the 2018-19 campaign). The NAIA will release its NAIA Scholar-Athletes in September with 37 Wildcats meeting the criteria (cumulative 3.5 GPA-or-higher and must have achieved junior academic status) compared to nine during the 2018-19 school year.

Both Savannah Jackson (women's soccer) and Jens Bendiksen (men's golf) were recognized as 2019-20 Academic All-District I® Team, selected by CoSIDA honorees with Jackson being named a First-Team Academic All-American® (2019 Academic All-America® NAIA soccer team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)) back in December – the third NAIA Academic All-American® in school history.
