Mitchell Uses Second-Half Run to Down JWU, 78-70

– A 17-0 run in the second half pushed Mitchell College (6-4) past the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's basketball team (0-13) en route to a 78-70 loss for the Wildcats on Wednesday night.

JWU, which led by as many as 12 points, held a 57-51 edge with 8:54 left in the game. Over the next seven minutes, Mitchell College went on a 17-0 run. The Mariners took their first lead of the game (since going up 2-0 to start the game) with a 3-pointer by Steffen Brunson with 7:20 on the game clock (58-57). The Mariners continued their run, extending the team's lead, 68-57 before freshman Dwayne Adams broke the JWU drought with a made free throw at the 2:09 mark in the second half.

The Wildcats tried to chip away at the double-digit lead but, got no closer than eight, falling 70-78.

Adams led all Wildcats with a career-high 24 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor. The native of Miami was 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for his second 20-point outing of the season. He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists versus the Mariners. Also scoring in double-figures was freshman Tristan Stephens, who posted 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting. The West Palm Beach, Florida, product grabbed six rebounds, notched two assists and recorded two steals on the night.

For the game, the Wildcats shot 36.2 percent from the floor (25-of-69) and hit 9-of-30 shots from 3-point range (30.0 percent). Mitchell College finished the night shooting 26-of-61 from the floor (42.6 percent) and was 48.0 percent from downtown (12-of-25). The Mariners outrebounded the Wildcats 49-35 and held a 9-7 edge on the offensive glass. The Wildcats forced 17 Mitchell College turnovers, resulting 19 points for JWU.

JWU will return to Sun Conference action on Saturday, January 5, hosting the Keiser Seahawks. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
