JWU Basketball Travels to Warner for Thursday Doubleheader

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 9, 2019) – The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's and women's basketball teams travel to Lake Wales, Florida, to take on the Warner Royals in a doubleheader on Thursday.

JWU Women's Basketball

Last time out: For the first time in program history, a pair of Wildcats scored 30 points in the same game as senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith (32) and sophomore Tianna Ayulo (30) led the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (4-11, 1-6 TSC) to an 82-63 win over the Keiser Seahawks (7-11, 1-6 TSC) on Saturday, January 5. Trailing 15-10 after one quarter, JWU battled back early in the second, taking the team's first lead of the contest following a layup by Auylo with 3:43 on the clock. After exchanging buckets with the Seahawks over the next minute and a half, the Wildcats closed out the half, outscoring KU, 7-3, to take a four-point lead heading into halftime. JWU held onto its lead for the remainder of the contest, outscoring Keiser, 48-33, over the final two quarters en route to the 19-point win. Gonzales-Smith led all Wildcats with 32 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor, including 8-of-14 from beyond the arc, tying her career-high in points from earlier this season (at Florida National – 11/20/18). The native of Richmond, California, added three assists, a game-high four steals and five rebounds in the contest. Ayulo notched the first 30-point outing of her JWU career, scoring a career-high 30 points on 14-of-23 shooting. The product of Hollywood, Florida, also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds with five assists and three steals.

JWU Men's Basketball

Last time out: The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's basketball team (0-14, 0-7 TSC) fell to the Keiser Seahawks (7-10, 3-4 TSC), 70-63, on Saturday, January 5, from the Wildcat Center. The Wildcats were led by freshman Dwayne Adams, who ended the contest with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. The native of Miami hit 3-of-6 shot from beyond the arc while dishing out a team-high six assists and recording a game-high three steals. Also scoring in double-figures was junior Michael Stuart, who added 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting, including three treys. Senior David Joachim led the Wildcats in rebounding, posting six boards versus the Seahawks.
