JWU Hosts Thomas in Basketball Doubleheader on Thursday

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 16, 2019) – The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's and women's basketball team will host the Thomas Night Hawks is a Sun Conference doubleheader on Thursday, January 17.

JWU Women's Basketball

Last time out: Webber International (7-10, 2-7 TSC) outscored the Wildcats, 47-27, in the second half as the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (5-12, 2-7 TSC) fell to the Warriors, 80-75, on Saturday, January, 12. The Wildcats held a 48-33 lead heading into halftime, shooting 50.0 percent from the floor (18-of-36) while holding the Warriors to just 28.2 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of action (11-of-39). However, WIU cut the JWU lead to 57-41 following a third quarter that saw the Wildcats score just nine points. A 29-point fourth quarter gave Webber International the five-point victory. Sophomore Tianna Ayulo led all Wildcats with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor. The native of Hollywood, Florida, also grabbed 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Ayulo was also tied for the team lead in assists (4) with senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith, who added 12 points on 5-of-18 shooting. The native of Richmond, California, led the contest with four steals. Senior Priscilla Fernandez notched a career-high 12 points, hitting on 4-of-5 attempts from 3-point range.

JWU Men's Basketball

Last time out: Converting a season-high 34 field goals, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's basketball team (1-15, 1-8 TSC) picked up its first win of the season with a 95-79 win over the Webber International Warriors (10-10, 2-7 TSC) on Saturday, January 12. Five Wildcats reached double-figures in scoring led by junior Michael Stuart, who posted 16 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the floor and was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Junior Sidney Alcena (5-of-11) and senior Jacknelson Joseph (5-of-12) added a 14 points apiece. Sophomore Jordan Martin contributed 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor while Willem Vermylen rounded out the scoring with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Alcena also grabbed a game-high-tying eight rebounds. Joining Alcena with eight boards was freshman Tristan Stephens. The native of West Palm Beach, Florida, scored eight points versus the Warriors. Vermylen was also a big contributor on the boards, grabbing seven in the contest. Freshman point guard Dwayne Adams dished out a career-high eight assists and added eight points.
