JWU Hosts Coastal Georgia in Basketball Doubleheader on Saturday

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 18, 2019) – The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's and women's basketball teams will host the Coastal Georgia Mariners in a Sun Conference basketball doubleheader on Saturday, January 19.

JWU Women's Basketball

Last time out: Outscoring the Night Hawks, 50-26, in the second half, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (6-12, 3-7 TSC) defeated Thomas (6-15, 3-7 TSC), 76-57, on Thursday evening. JWU used double-digit performances from four Wildcats to earn the team's third conference win in its last four outings. Sophomore Tianna Ayulo continued to show why she is the leading scorer in the Sun Conference, pouring in a team-high 28 points on 12-of-26 shooting. Averaging 21.0 points-per-game, Ayulo tallied her 11th 20-point outing of the season on Thursday. The native of Hollywood, Florida, also grabbed 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double on the year. Sophomore Alexis McClain registered her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and corralling 11 boards versus the Night Hawks. The product of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, was a force in the paint, recording a career-high four blocked shots. Freshman Jordan McDuffie added a career-high 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. The native of White Plains, Maryland, was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line as she reached double-digits in scoring for the seventh time this year. McDuffie also grabbed seven rebounds on the night. Senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith rounded out the team's leading scorers, posting 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. The native of Richmond, California, also dished out a season-high seven assists and tallied six boards.

JWU Men's Basketball

Last time out: The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's basketball team (2-15, 2-8 TSC) earned its second-straight victory with a 66-61 win over the Thomas Night Hawks (9-9, 5-5 TSC) on Thursday night. In a game that had 12 lead changes and saw the score tied four times, the Wildcats (trailing by six at halftime) hit three-straight treys to start the second half and take a 36-33 lead with 18:36 left in the game. It would be a lead that JWU would not relinquish, ending with the five-point win. Freshman Dwayne Adams led all Wildcats with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 shooting from the free-throw line. The native of Miami scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half including his two made free throws which he converted with 12 seconds left in the game with JWU leading by just one, 62-61. Adams also dished out a game-high five assists and registered four steals. Junior Sidney Alcena joined Adams in scoring in double-figures, adding 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Junior Willem Vermylen notched seven points with five boards and a game-high three blocked shots. Freshman Tristan Stephens contributed eight points and collected seven rebounds for the Wildcats, while senior David Joachim also registered eight boards to lead JWU.
