BRUNSWICK, Ga. (February 8, 2020) – Despite career highs in points by redshirt freshman Negus Hazel and sophomore Vince Ventulan, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's basketball team (7-15, 3-11 TSC) fell to the Coastal Georgia Mariners (13-13, 6-8 TSC) on Saturday afternoon.
After 40 minutes of action no winner was decided ass the game was knotted up a 77-all. In overtime, the Mariners used an 11-2 run to start the extra frame, putting the game out of reach.
Hazel, who bested his previous high of 19 (yesterday at Thomas), posted a career-high 21 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor and 10-of-11 shooting from the free-throw line. Hazel also grabbed five boards in the game. Ventulan, who scored 19 points, went 6-of-10 from the floor and was 6-of-8 from the free-throw line while recording a team-high-tying six rebounds.
Joining Hazel and Ventulan in double-digit scoring were Dante Pace (13) and Kevin Rostamian (13).
The Wildcats ended the day shooting 40.0 percent from the floor (28-of-70) and was 8-of-30 from 3-point range (26.7 percent). The Mariners shot 25-of-61 from the field (41.0 percent) and converted 22.6 percent of their shots from long range (7-of-31).
CCG out-rebounded JWU, 50-31, and held a 13-5 edge on the offensive glass.
JWU will return home to take on the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Thursday, February 13. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
