LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Sept. 1, 2018) – The Johnson & Wales men's soccer team (1-1) dropped its first contest of the season, falling to the No. 8-ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies, 2-0, at the Grizzly Soccer Complex on Saturday night.
The game is the first of two for the Wildcats as part of this weekend's 2018 Grizzly Soccer Classic.
In an evenly-fought contest, GGC used a goal in the ninth minute to put JWU into an early hole. The Wildcats had their share of chances to draw even before halftime but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Grizzlies (2-1-1) held an 8-5 edge in shots heading into halftime with a one-goal advantage.
The Wildcats came out and matched their nationally-ranked opponent's effort in the second half, looking produce the equalizer. However, GGC scored an insurance goal in the 54th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
Unable to overcome the two-goal deficit, the Wildcats fell to the Grizzlies, 2-0.
GGC outshot JWU 16-13 with shots on goal even at five apiece. Senior Arthur Mesquita led all Wildcats with three total shots. The native of Sao Paulo, Brazil was one of five members of the JWU squad to test GGC goalkeeper Matija Gligorovic.
Gonzalo Rudolf (1-1) was saddled with the loss, registering three saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Wildcats will remain in Lawrenceville, Georgia, for their second and final contest of the 2018 Grizzly Soccer Classic when they take on LSU-Alexandria on Monday, September 3. Game time is set for noon.
