MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Sept. 8, 2018) – Senior Valentin Salinas notched his second game-winning goal of the weekend as the Johnson & Wales men's soccer team (3-2-0) defeated Dalton State (3-3-1), 3-2, on Saturday afternoon from Billy D. Hilyer Stadium on the campus of Faulkner University.
The contest was part of this weekend's Faulkner Invitational.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when senior Patricio Rolon connected on a cross from freshman Luciano Soto. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, sent the Soto cross, which was struck toward the far post, back across the frame for his second goal of the season. The assist for Soto was his second of the year.
The Roadrunners tied the match in the 20th minute with a goal by Daniel Valenciano.
After a 1-1 draw following the first 45 minutes of action, Dalton State took a 2-1 lead after a goal by Jose Villalobos in the 51st minute.
Senior Rodrigo Doben tied the game in the 63rd minute with his second goal of the season. Freshman Nicolas Gomez, who set up the score, earned his third assist of the year.
Salinas broke the 2-2 draw in the 72nd minute, scoring his team-leading fourth goal of the year. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, collected the rebound after his initial shot was blocked by a Dalton State defender and buried the ball into the back of the net. It marked his second game-winning goal of the season and led to JWU's second-straight win.
Freshman Jhon Perez (2-0-0) earned his second win of the season, making four saves in 90 minutes of action.
For the game, Dalton State held a slight 12-10 edge in total shots, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams recorded four corner kicks in the contest.
The Wildcats take on Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Wednesday, September 12. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
