NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Sept. 11, 2018) – The Johnson & Wales men's soccer team (3-2-0) head to St. Petersburg, Florida, to take on NCAA Division II foe Eckerd College (2-2-1) on Wednesday evening. Game time from Johnson Field is set for 7:00 p.m.
The Wildcats are coming off a pair of victories at the Faulkner Invitational last weekend. JWU defeated host-institution Faulkner, 3-2, on Friday, September 7, and downed Dalton State, 3-2, less than 24 hours later to close out the weekend tournament. Senior Valentin Salinas scored his team-leading third and fourth goals of the season, scoring the game-winner in both contests. Freshman Nicolas Gomez registered two assists during the team's back-to-back wins while first-year goalkeeper Jhon Perez collected his first two collegiate victories over the weekend.
JWU enters this week's action averaging 4.00 goals-per-game (No. 7 in the nation and No. 2 in the Sun Conference) on 18.2 shots-per-game (No. 21 in the nation and No. 2 in the conference). The Wildcats have tallied 57 total points (20g, 17a) which is third-best in the conference. With 17 assists on the year, JWU averages 3.40 assists-per-game (No. 2 in the conference and No. 5 in the nation). Defensively, the Wildcats have allowed eight goals and six assists for 22 points.
Salinas enters Wednesday's game with four goals and two assists for a team-leading 10 points. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, ranked No. 31 in the nation in total points (No. 7 in the conference). Senior Patricio Rolon is second on the team in scoring with eight points. The JWU midfielder has scored two goals and has a team-high four assists. His four assists rank No. 10 in the nation. Rounding out the Wildcat's top goal scorers are freshman Lucas Colodrero (2), senior Rodrigo Doben (2), and sophomore Daniel Fantauzzi (2).
Cardiac Cats: This past weekend, JWU earned two victories at the Faulkner Invitational in Montgomery, Alabama. However, both victories were not for the faint of heart. During the team's game versus Faulkner, the Wildcats trailed, 2-0 late in the second half. A 60th-minute goal by Fernando Arzeno got JWU on the board, an 81st-minute strike by Bevan Baker tied the match, and an 89th-minute score by Valentin Salinas gave the Wildcats their first lead of the contest. A day later, JWU fell behind Dalton State, 2-1 in the 51st minute before Rodrigo Doben tied the match in the 63rd minute. Salinas scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute for the team's second-straight win.
A Look at Eckerd: The Tritons come into Wednesday's match winless in their last two matches (0-1-1), including a 3-1 loss at Alabama (Huntsville) on Sunday. Eckerd College has outscored its opposition, 9-8, on a 96-52 advantage in total shots. Juan David Tejada leads the Tritons with four goals (8 pts) in five matches played.
