Wildcats Close Out Non-Conference Action with an 86-77 Loss to Talladega

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Dec. 29, 2017) – Despite a pair of 20-point scorers, the Johnson & Wales women's basketball team (4-11) dropped its final non-conference game with an 86-77 loss to Talladega (9-6) on Friday afternoon.

Diamond Williams (21 points) and Bevin Mays (20 points) led the Wildcats in scoring, posting their seventh and fourth 20-point performance of the year, respectively. Williams went 6-of-15 from the floor and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line versus the Tornadoes. The product of Ft. Lauderdale also grabbed seven rebounds and registered a team-high three steals. Mays was 5-of-13 from the floor, including three treys to go along with a 7-of-10 performance from the charity stripe. Freshman Tianna Ayulo recorded a team-best eight boards and scored 15 points before fouling out of the contest. Ayulo has reached double-figures in 14 of the 15 total games she has played in this season. JoNae Gonzales poured in 12 points while tallying a team-high four assists on the afternoon.

After a 23-all tie following the first quarter of play, Talladega out-scored the Wildcats 20-11 in the second, maintaining the lead for the remainder of the contest. JWU shot 22-of-58 (37.9 percent) from the floor and was 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from beyond the arc. The Tornadoes converted 32-of-73 from the field (43.8 percent) and made 6-of-19 from downtown. Talladega held a 42-37 advantage in rebounding giving the Tornadoes a 23-18 edge in second-chance points. The Wildcats converted 28 points from the free-throw line on 35 attempts. It marked the third time this season that JWU had gone to the line 30 times or more in a game.

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 6 to take on Sun Conference foe Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Fla. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
