@JWUWBBallNM Falls to No. 3 Southeastern, 90-58

– The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (3-5, 0-3 TSC) fell to the No. 3-ranked Southeastern Fire (7-0, 3-0 TSC), 90-58, on Thursday evening.

JWU trailed SEU by 10 points at halftime, 42-32. But, a 20-point deficit in the third quarter put the game out of reach as the Wildcats dropped their third-straight Sun Conference game. JWU struggled in the third, draining just four baskets while posting a 30.8 percent shooting percentage from the floor. The Fire took advantage of the Wildcat's poor shooting, hitting on 11-of-22 attempts from the field to outscore JWU, 28-8.

The Wildcats were led by senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith, who recorded a team-high 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor. The native of Richmond, California, drained four treys and registered six assists in the contest. It marked the seventh time this season Gonzales-Smith notched double digits in scoring. Sophomore Alexis McClain added a season-high-tying 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor. The product of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, also grabbed seven boards. Sophomore Tianna Ayulo scored 11 points with five rebounds and a game-high eight assists. The native of Hollywood, Florida, shot 5-of-14 from the floor versus the Fire. Junior Lexie Jackson led the Wildcats with a JWU-career-high eight rebounds. The native of Indio, California, also added four points and two steals.

The Wildcats finished the game, shooting 41.7 percent from the floor (25-of-60) and were 5-of-19 from 3-point range (26.3 percent). SEU converted 44.0 percent of its shots from the floor (33-of-75) and drained 35.5 percent from downtown (11-of-31).

SEU held a slight edge in rebounding, 40-39, and forced 25 JWU turnovers resulting in 36 points for the Fire.

The Wildcats will return home to host the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Saturday, December 1. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
