Wildcats Drop Sun Conference Home Opener, 61-52

– The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (3-6, 0-4 TSC) dropped its Sun Conference home opener with a 61-52 loss to (rv) Ave Maria (10-1, 4-0 TSC) on Saturday afternoon.

Led by sophomore Tianna Ayulo's 23 points, the Wildcat shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the floor versus the Gyrenes. Ayulo was 8-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. The native of Hollywood, Florida, converted 5-of-9 shots from the free-throw line for her third 20-point outing of the season. Ayulo also added seven rebounds and two assists. Senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith contributed 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting in 36 minutes of action. Junior Lexie Jackson led JWU in rebounding, corralling eight boards. The native of Indio, California, also added two steals and two blocked shots. Freshman Carol Hadnot registered a game-high five steals versus AMU. The native of Oceanside, California, tallied a career-high seven rebounds to go along with three assists.

The Wildcats made just three treys in the contest, shooting 16.7 percent (3-of-18) from beyond the arc. The Gyrenes ended the night, shooting 39.1 percent from the floor (25-of-64) and also struggled from downtown, converting 2-of-12 3-point attempts (16.7 percent). Both squads finished the game going 9-of-13 from the free-throw line.

AMU forced 16 JWU turnovers resulting in 19 points for the Gyrenes while the Wildcats scored 11 points off of 15 Ave Maria turnovers. AMU held a 46-39 edge in rebounding and scored 10-more points in the paint than the Wildcats (40-30).

JWU will hit the road to take on Florida Memorial on Thursday, December 6. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
