) – A jumper by Briar Cliff's Taylor Vasa with three seconds left in the game handed the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (3-9) a 77-75 loss during the first day of the Cruzin' Classic.

JWU trailed by 10 with 4:13 left in the game but, battled back going on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 75-75 with 33 seconds remaining. JoNae Gonzales-Smith's fifth 3-pointer of the game tied the contest for the 10th time to cap off the Wildcat's run.

Following the jumper by Vasa and a JWU timeout, Gonzales-Smith, who finished the night with a game-high 19 points, tried to send the contest to overtime. However, the senior guard was unable to tie the game, resulting in the two-point loss. Gonzales-Smith shot 6-of-18 from the floor, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range. The native of Richmond, California, also collected seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Sophomore Tianna Ayulo contributed 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting and led the Wildcats with nine rebounds. Freshman Jordan McDuffie added 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting with four assists and three steals.

The Wildcats ended the contest shooting 38.7 percent from the floor (29-of-75) and drained 7-of-28 attempts from 3-point range (25.0 percent). The Chargers (8-6) connected on 40.9 percent of their shots from the floor (27-of-66) and were 9-of-25 from beyond the arc (36.0 percent).

JWU outrebounded Briar Cliff, 47-41, and held a 20-14 edge on the offensive glass. The Wildcats scored 29 second-chance points to just 11 for the Chargers.

The Wildcats will take on St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday, December 18. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
