Four Wildcats Score in Double-Figure in 81-71 Loss to No. 21 St. Xavier (Ill.)

– Despite four Wildcats scoring in double-figures, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (3-10) fell to the No. 21-ranked St. Xavier (Ill.) Cougars (9-3), 81-71, on Tuesday afternoon from the 2018 Cruzin' Classic in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Leading the way for the Wildcats were senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith and freshman Carol Hadnot, who scored 14 points apiece. For Gonzales-Smith, who was 5-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line, it was her 10th-straight game of 10-or-more points and the 13th time this season she reach double-figures in scoring. The native of Richmond, California, also corralled 10 boards for her second double-double of the season. Hadot, who was 5-of-10 from the floor with three treys, reached double-digits in scoring for the first time in her JWU career. The native of Oceanside, California, also collected five rebounds in the game.

Sophomore Tianna Ayulo scored 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds while sophomore Alexis McClain added 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting from the floor and 4-of-5 shooting from the charity stripe. 

For the game, JWU shot 34.2 percent from the floor (26-of-76) and was 7-of-26 from 3-point range (26.9 percent). St. Xavier ended the contest hitting on 35-of-71 attempts from the floor (49.3 percent) and drained 34.8 percent from downtown (8-of-23). The Wildcats outrebounded the Cougars, 46-41, and held a decisive advantage on the offensive glass, 24-12.

JWU forced 15 SXU turnovers that resulted in 27 points for the Wildcats. However, the Cougars outscored the Wildcats in the second and third quarters, 47-25, to take a 64-43 lead heading into the final frame. JWU controlled the fourth posting 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting (50.0 percent) but it was not enough as the Wildcats suffered the 10-point loss.

JWU will return home to host Doane on Thursday, December 20. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
