Wildcats Tip Off 2019 with Doubleheader versus Keiser on Saturday

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 4, 2019) – The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's and women's basketball team tip of 2019 with a Sun Conference doubleheader versus the Keiser Seahawks on Saturday, January 5. The first game of the double dip will begin at 2:00 p.m. (women's) followed by the men's game slated for 4:00 p.m.

JWU Women's Basketball

Last time out: With the game tied 65-65, four made free throws in the final 1:09 made by the Doane Tigers (3-13) led to a 69-65 loss for the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) (3-11) women's basketball team on Thursday, December 20. JWU, which trailed by 50-39 late in the third, rattled off 11-straight points to draw even with 7:40 left the play in the game. Following the bucket by sophomore Tianna Ayulo to tie the game at 50-all, both the Wildcats and Tigers exchanged buckets in a back-and-forth affair that saw five lead changes and four tied scores before Doane took the final lead of the game from the charity stripe. Leading the Wildcats in scoring was Ayulo, who registered 25 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor and 8-of-11 shooting from the free-throw line. The native of Hollywood, Florida, also tallied three assists and two steals. The 20-point outing was the eighth of the season for Ayulo. Sophomore Alexis McClain recorded her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. The product of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, also notched a game-high three blocked shots. Freshman Jordan McDuffie added 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting to go along with four assists before fouling out of the contest.

JWU Men's Basketball

Last time out: A 17-0 run in the second half pushed Mitchell College (6-4) past the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) men's basketball team (0-13) en route to a 78-70 loss for the Wildcats on Wednesday, December 19. JWU, which led by as many as 12 points, held a 57-51 edge with 8:54 left in the game. Over the next seven minutes, Mitchell College went on a 17-0 run. The Mariners took their first lead of the game (since going up 2-0 to start the game) with a 3-pointer by Steffen Brunson with 7:20 on the game clock (58-57). The Mariners continued their run, extending the team's lead, 68-57 before freshman Dwayne Adams broke the JWU drought with a made free throw at the 2:09 mark in the second half. The Wildcats tried to chip away at the double-digit lead but, got no closer than eight, falling 70-78. Adams led all Wildcats with a career-high 24 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor. The native of Miami was 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for his second 20-point outing of the season. He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists versus the Mariners. Also scoring in double-figures was freshman Tristan Stephens, who posted 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting. The West Palm Beach, Florida, product grabbed six rebounds, notched two assists and recorded two steals on the night.
