Gonzales-Smith and Ayulo Lead Wildcats to First Conference Win of the Season

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2019)
– For the first time in program history, a pair of Wildcats scored 30 points in the same game as senior JoNae Gonzales-Smith (32) and sophomore Tianna Ayulo (30) led the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (4-11, 1-6 TSC) to an 82-63 win over the Keiser Seahawks (7-11, 1-6 TSC) on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 15-10 after one quarter, JWU battled back early in the second, taking the team's first lead of the contest following a layup by Auylo with 3:43 on the clock. After exchanging buckets with the Seahawks over the next minute and a half, the Wildcats closed out the half, outscoring KU, 7-3, to take a four-point lead heading into halftime. JWU held onto its lead for the remainder of the contest, outscoring Keiser, 48-33, over the final two quarters en route to the 19-point win.

Gonzales-Smith led all Wildcats with 32 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor, including 8-of-14 from beyond the arc, tying her career-high in points from earlier this season (at Florida National – 11/20/18). The native of Richmond, California, added three assists, a game-high four steals and five rebounds in the contest. Ayulo notched the first 30-point outing of her JWU career, scoring a career-high 30 points on 14-of-23 shooting. The product of Hollywood, Florida, also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds with five assists and three steals.

For the game, JWU shot 50.8 percent from the floor (33-of-65) and was 10-of-23 from 3-point range (43.5 percent). Keiser ended the game shooting 24-of-54 from the floor (44.4 percent) and converted 42.9 percent of its attempts from downtown (3-of-7). The Wildcats forced 13 KU turnovers resulting in 23 points for JWU.

The Wildcats will next travel to Lake Wales, Florida, to take on Warner on Thursday, January 10. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
