NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (October 18, 2019) – Four Wildcats reached double-figures in a 78-55 season-opening win for the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (1-0) over the Virgin Island Buccaneers (0-3) on Friday evening from the Wildcat Center.
Junior Tianna Ayulo led the Wildcats with 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor while converting 6-of-10 attempts from the free-throw line. The native of Hollywood, Florida, also grabbed eight boards and dished out four assists.
Freshman Shykim Gillion registered her first collegiate double-double, posting 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting and notching a team-best 14 boards. Sophomore Jordan McDuffie came off the bench to contribute 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while junior Alexis McClain poured in 11 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the floor.
Freshman Shikal Gillion dished out a game-high seven assists in the contest. The native of Boca Raton, Florida, also added five boards and three steals.
The Wildcats shot 41.1 percent from the floor (30-of-73) and converted 4-of-17 from 3-point range (23.5 percent). UVI made 31.0 percent of its shots from the floor (22-of-71) and hit on 4-of-16 attempts from beyond the arc. JWU held a 52-48 edge in rebounding and forced 23 Buccaneer turnover, resulting in 25 Wildcat points.
JWU will host the Florida National Conquistadors on Tuesday, November 5. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
