NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (December 5, 2019) – Led by a career-high 23 points by freshman Shykim Gillion, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (6-0, 3-0 TSC) defeated the Coastal Georgia Mariners (6-5, 2-2 TSC), 78-74, on Thursday evening. The win marked the sixth-straight win to start the season for the Wildcats - the first time a JWU has done that in program history.
Gillion posted 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor and was 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. The native of Delray Beach, Florida, also grabbed seven rebounds versus the Mariners.
Sophomore Jordan McDuffie added 15 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the floor and 5-of-11 shooting from the charity stripe while dishing out three assists and record two steals. Shikal Gillion notched 14 points with four assists and a career-high eight steals.
Junior Tianna Ayulo registered her second double-double of the season notching 12 points and tallying a team-best 10 rebounds. The native of Hollywood, Florida, also led JWU with five assists.
JWU finished the night shooting 28-of-61 from the floor (45.9 percent) and converted 21.4 percent from 3-point range (3-of-14). CCG shot 44.3 percent from the floor (27-of-61) and was 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) from beyond the arc. The Wildcats out-rebounded the Mariners, 42-36.
JWU will host the Thomas Night Hawks on Saturday, December 7. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
