Wildcats Hold Off Cumberland (Tenn.), 71-67, to Remain Unbeaten

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (December 16, 2019)
– A put-back by junior Chrystal Pressley with 18 seconds left on the clock guided the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (8-0) to a 71-67 win over the Cumberland (Tenn.) Phoenix (4-7) on Monday evening.

The native of Miramar, Florida, registered her 13th board of the contest, collecting the rebound off a blocked Tianna Ayulo shot as time was winding down. Pressley drained two on the offensive board to give JWU a 69-67 lead. Freshman Shikal Gillion added two more points in the final second off an offensive rebound to give the Wildcats the 71-67 victory.

Pressley ended the night with seven points on 3-of-9 shooting with a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with two steals and two blocked shots. Shikal Gillion notched 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds while dishing out four assists versus the Phoenix. Ayulo added 10 points and recorded seven rebounds while posting a game-high three steals.

The Wildcats were led offensively by freshman Shykim Gillion, who notched her second 20-point outing of the season, scoring 21 points on 10-of-21 shooting. The native of Delray Beach, Florida, also notched five boards, three assists and two steals.

Also scoring in double-figures was sophomore Ayshia Scott who posted 12 points.

The Wildcats ended the game shooting 34.1 percent from the floor (28-of-82) and hit on 6-of-20 shots from 3-point range (30.0 percent). Cumberland (Tenn.) shot 26-of-68 from the floor (38.2 percent) and converted 31.3 percent of its shots from downtown (5-of-16).

JWU held a slight edge in rebounds, 51-50, but outscored the Phoenix in second chance points 25-8, recording 26 offensive boards.

The Wildcats will continue their current homestand, hosting Texas Wesleyan on Wednesday, December 18. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
